Definition: A therapy based on a principle that there is nervous connection between the organs of the body and the body's surface. Acupuncture involves the stimulation of the so called acupuncture points in such a way as to modify the activity of the point and so influence other parts of the body.

Background: Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese process dating back to the Stone Age. It is said that as long ago as 3000BC the Chinese noticed that soldiers who had been wounded with arrows sometimes got relief from diseases which had been troubling them for years. Whether this was true or not it led the Chinese to evolve a system of medicine which cured diseases by penetrating the skin at specific points. Acupuncture works on the principle that in all diseases, whether they be mental or physical, there are tender areas at certain points on the body which disappear when the disease is cured.

Philosophy: Acupuncture along with all other types of traditional Chinese medicine is based on the principle that optimum health is achieved and maintained by balancing the flow of life energy through the body. This life energy is known as Chi or Qi and is seen to be made up of two polarities: the Yin which is passive, internal, contracting and cold; and the Yang which is active, external, expanding and warm. For good health to be maintained, Yin and Yang need to be in constant interplay — flowing, balancing and moving between each other.

The points are organised into twelve groups. The points in each group are joined by an imaginary line on the body's surface called a meridian. The twelve main meridians control the lung, large bowel, stomach, spleen, heart, small bowel, bladder and liver. To the Chinese these meridians are an integral part of what makes us 'tick'. The Chinese describe how the body's forces — Chi — circulate in these meridians, then they interpret all diseases as a disturbance of these circulating life forces.

Uses of Acupuncture: Acupuncture treatment based on the principle of traditional Chinese medicine is said to have a wide application, including boosting the immune function, normalising blood circulation, assisting the female reproductive system, relieving headaches, migraines and musculoskeletal pain and treating respiratory and digestive disorders.
